Hi, I’m Nate!

What can I say about myself and why should you care?

Ever since I can remember, I’ve had more than a few passions in life. I love to learn new things and solve problems. I love visual arts and music. I also have a strong desire to help others and share lessons I have learned along the way.

From an engineering perspective, I was one of a few kids growing up that had the privilege of being in a technology-track program in elementary school. This was way back when Apple II computers were hot. I remember writing QBasic in middle school and Pascal as a freshman in high school. I was gifted Borland’s C++ Dev kit and wrote my first imaging software at age 17 (Targa Image Editor). I’ve been coding ever since, and I can safely say that I’m not happy if I don’t have my hands in some project or system making it better.

From a photography point of view, my mother was our family photographer growing up and I always admired the prints and slides we got back from the processing labs. I am lucky enough to have her old camera sitting in my office, a Konica C35.

But, the photography bug bit me in college when several of my friends convinced me to take several film, video and audio communication classes and brought their film cameras to school. As a senior, I signed up to be a yearbook photographer and shot as many sports events as I could. I learned how to roll and develop my own bulk film and would shoot around 20 rolls of film a week.

I’ve been an avid photographer and technologist ever since, and the two interact in ways that are both inspiring and challenging.

This site is at attempt to document my journey though that odd intersection in life. My hope is that you will enjoy a little slice of it and maybe take a few things away from it that will influence your own photography or engineering journey.
